Absolutely free
Absolutely free music may be available locally on a operative situation. Duration is 1 - 2 hours in K/W. While I play and let people enjoy my music I also do some sound tuning. There are breaks and interruptions. A little like a rehearsal on almost any client's indoor premises, preferably in Kitchener. Check website for phone number, call, ask.
Yes, that is right, I play for free at most places. As a senior I have a stable income and don't need to make money playing music. So why do I charge anyway ?
Before I answer this let me explain who may not be charged anything:
Individual people, families who are on social assistance in a way may inquire for an absolute free or lowered cost performance. I can't think of anyone else. Sometimes I play for free because I am a member, e.g. Concordia Choirs, Amigos Latinas, Swiss Clubs if they care to ask me get some support. It is a "family thing".
Charitable and other organisations, churches etc. are not on a social assistance. These organisations might have members who earn more and have more capital than I do. Let them sponsor my performance if the organisation can't.
What do I charge for ?
Pretty simple, it is for paying down the investment into the musical instrument and related equipment. The investment is well over $12000 (twelve K$!). I bring these items to the place where I play. These need to be transported, which is not without cost either.
My clients and prospects know this. If they can not afford to pay what I charge they tend to call a piano player. A piano player who has no own piano and can not read music (no need to buy any) has basically no cost at all, besides may be the bus ticket. So whatever s/he gets is 100% "profit".
My situation differs: I need about $120 to help a local performance pay down my investment. Actually I typically charge only half, $60. This amount does not cover transportation, my car or a taxi. This means I am already sharing more than 50% of the cost with any place like Seniors Homes, etc. It is also the reason why I charge businesses and well-off people more, may be $120, depending on the situation. I don't make a profit !
Just one more reason: There may be someone out there who needs every dollar s/he can get. It would be very unfair to play for zero and eliminate such people having a chance. So unless you are a private individual on social benefit there is hardly a way to have me playing for less or without any charge at all.
